Featured Artist Site of the Month - April 2006
Stephanie Pui-Mun Law
Stephanie Pui-Mun Law is the amazing artist we are proud to highlight for April's Featured Artist Site of the Month!
Stephanie's art has an undeniable magical and mystical quality about it, as if she is painting and tapping directly into a pratically spiritual well of creativity. Her paintings are powerful and evockitive, beautiful and sublime. And yet there is a sense of playfulness and joy, a sense of worshiping all that which makes life magical and beautiful, deep, and tragic, soulful and irreverant.
Please do read and learn more about this talented artist below!

How old were you when you first realized you wanted to be an artist?
As early as I can remember.
What was the main thing that made you decide you wanted to be an artist?
As I said, it was what I always wanted. I don't think there was a particular thing, but I knew I loved to draw and paint.
Have you had any formal training, or are you entirely self-taught?
I studied fine art at UC Berkeley. However, the art program there was focused in abstract expressionism and highly discouraged the kind of art I've come to do now. So in a way I feel it's mostly self taught.
What was the most important lesson that you have learned so far in regard to your art or developing as an artist?
Persistance and Practice!
What is your primary medium that you work in? Why do you find you enjoy that medium the most? What others do you like to use besides that?
Watercolor. I love the subtle color shifts that can be attained by layering, and the ethereal quality of it. More practically I enjoy the quick dry time of watercolors and how compact they are and easy to bring with me when I travel. I occasionally do digital work, some pencil, pen and ink, and acrylics.
Do you have any favorite artist(s)? Who and why?
Alan Lee - he makes watercolors seem so effortless and spontaneous.
How do you get ready to create? Do you have any specific things you MUST do before you can sit down and be creative? Rituals, time of day, location, etc.
I need natural light. This used to frustrate me quite a bit as my painting time was limited to when the sun was in the sky but then I discovered natural light lamps and that made a very happy artist! I like a nice cup of hot tea while I paint as well. Kept far away from my wash water so that errant brushes don't get dipped into it!
What is your favorite piece you've created?
It varies. My favorites are always changing to my more recent pieces. I think this is a good thing as it shows in my own mind at least that I am making progress and improving.
But here are a few of my longtime favorites:

Where do you live? Where would you like to live if you could live anywhere at all?
I live in Oakland, CA. Honestly, I'm pretty happy in the Bay Area. I love it here.
What do you hope people come away with after seeing your artwork?
I hope that they can see the beautiy in the world as I can, in nature, and in the most mundane aspects of everyday.
What moves you as an artist?
Nature, light, water, movement, dance, stories....
Have you ever had a creative block? How long did it last? What did you do to break away from it?
Not really. I have so many ideas that I want to paint that I don't run into blocks. I keep a sketchbook of random ideas, and if I need something I flip through there and something will inspire me.
Where do you see yourself as an artist in the next 5 years? The next 10 years?
A better artist hopefully! I am happy simply painting. That's why I do this -- because I love creating, I love art.
Do you have any specific goals as an artist for yourself or your art? What are they?
To be a better artist hopefully!
How do you promote yourself as an artist? What worked and what didn't work?
The internet is the best promotional tool for an artist these days. I have my website, and I also post my art on various other art communities. I attend various fantasy conventions throughout the year as well.
What artistic advice would you give to a budding artist?
Persistance. I believe that if you truely want something, you can make it happen.

There never was a merry world since the fairies left off dancing, and the Parson left conjuring. -- John Selden, Parson, Table Talk, 1689
