I've been recently dabbling in polymer clays and I must say what a HUGE difference from traditional clay it is!

It's challenging still for me to switch my mental process over from the clay I've always worked with in the past to this wonderful new fangled stuff, though I expect that I will at some point get way more comfortable with it.

I've tried Sculpey, but the texture of it,,,, I don't know, it just didn't click with me on an art media level. So far anyway, lol!

I've been currently playing mostly with the Prosculpt polymer line, and that has been pretty satsfying. I've mixed it with Cernit and that has lent it a very interesting finish, but it seems to be a wee bot harder to move the clay around when I do that.

I do have some Fimo that I keep meaning to play with by mixing it into the Prosculpt, but been having too much fun using the Prosculpt alone, LOL!

So I'm curious, :D what are YOUR preferences? What are the pros and the cons that YOU have found with using certain polymer clays alone as compared to mixing them with other polymer clays?

I only remember using Fimo so far, so I guess I would have to say that's my favourite.;) I used to have some problems with a few of the colours. The skin tone colours were always easy to work with, but some of the other colours were too hard or too... kind of slimy.

I started making the clothes for my creations out of material, and started using doll hair so the clay problem was solved, as I only needed to use skin tones then.

I haven't made a doll for quite some time now, but if I do decide to make more then I might try another brand of clay just to see how it feels.

I hear a lot of folks like FIMO. I don't think I've tried it yet.

You say some are slimey? Yuck! LOL!

One of the colours I tried (I can't remember which one, but I think it was one of the greens) was really sticky and became almost slime like the more I tried to work with it. It wouldn't hold any shape, clung to my fingers, and just kind of melted into a shapeless blob when I put it down.

I'm getting REALLY curious about the bend and flex sculpey, thinking about seeing if it works good for rooting hair. But FIRST... I need to finish my WIP guy and I am soooooooo lagging with him LOL.

I bought some of that once, couldnt get on with it so gave it to my kids! They do pretty well out of impulse buys on my front lol!
I couldnt get on with cernit at all, puppenfimo is ok but the colour is a bit gaudy when baked! I do mix in different shades of prosculpt so that they have a more life like look. I think its all down to personal preference on alot of it and definitely toomuch trial and error!
Ive seen your little man, hes adorable cant wait to see him finished hun! Keep us updated!

I think im in danger of the house collapsing if I buy any more, really got to trim this craft room down to half what it is lol! if I ever won the lottery I think it would be cheaper to just get a warehouse to fill lmao! Still can never find things when I need them, worse if I tidy up!

Things are getting a little cramped in here too. But there are worse things to be surrounded by than art materials.;)

I want to someday give working with clay a try. Which is best for someone who has extremely sensitive skin? Do you wear gloves while you work? See, I know nothing, so any info would help.

Hi there Pixie you could always make sure you rub your hands in a baby powder or corn flour it helps preserve your skin and also helps smooth out the clay. I would be worried about you trying to use the clay with gloves on as its quite tacky, you would probably end up sticking to the clay as opposed to sculpting it. But then not speaking from experience there hun!
I always wash my hands thoroughly plus clean them with baby wipes before using the clay, then wash them thoroughly and then use a good hand lotion afterwards to protect my skin.
Hope that helps hun!
